Our Beginning

Born from Vision,

Maati was founded by Sydney-based optometrists Michael Mihailidis and Maria Dimitratos with one clear purpose - to create contact lenses they could wholeheartedly stand behind.


With over 30 years in eyecare, they saw the need for lenses that didn’t compromise on safety, comfort, or transparency. Inspired by the Greek word ‘Mati’ (eye) and the ancient symbol of protection, the Evil Eye, Maati is more than a product - it's peace of mind in every blink.

2018

Maati concept takes shape in their Hurstville clinic.

2020

TGA approvals and international manufacturing partners secured.

2024

Colour lenses and new hydration technologies introduced.

2019

First prototypes developed
and tested.

Maati officially launches.

From ultra-hydrating hydrogel to our high-oxygen silicone hydrogel, we choose materials that prioritise comfort and long-term eye health.

With over three decades of experience, Michael Mihailidis and Maria Dimitratos have dedicated their careers to redefining modern eye care - blending science, ethics, and genuine care. After graduating from the UNSW School of Optometry in 1988, they founded Icon Eyewear in Hurstville, earning trust for their precision and expertise in dry eye care, myopia management, Ortho-K, and contact lenses.

Guided by a belief that comfort and integrity should never be compromised, they created Maati - a brand that blends science with purpose. With their deep understanding of what eyes truly need, every Maati lens is designed for lasting comfort, safety, and sustainability, and made without forever chemicals. From their first innovation, Contact Me, to Maati’s signature lenses, their vision remains simple: to bring clarity, confidence, and care to every blink.
